Now, a little over two years after Musk's post, we get a first-person look on what it's like to experience dizzying acceleration in the planet's quickest production vehicle. The truck will also have an enhanced version of Tesla's semi-autonomous driving system, AutoPilot.

CEO Elon Musk first revealed the company's plans to introduce the next level of acceleration in 2015 when he penned his "Three Dog Day" blog post. "Driving a gasoline sports vehicle is going to feel like a steam engine with a side of quiche".

From there, the specs diverge.

The semi truck, called Tesla Semi, can go as far as 500 miles between charges and can haul 80,000 pounds at a time. A 300-mile version will also be available. Fleet operators want reliable trucks, and Tesla will have to prove it can make them, said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst with the vehicle shopping site Autotrader.

The Roadster will also be able to run a quarter mile from stop in 8.8 seconds, Tesla said. Its top speed is "above 250 miles per hour", Musk said.

The Russian Billionaire Behind Christie's Controversial $450M Leonardo
The previous record for an Old Master painting was $US76.7 million for Massacre of the Innocents by Peter Paul Rubens in 2002. Jussi Pylkkanen, Christie's president, served as the auctioneer for the battle that lasted just under twenty minutes.

The Roadster will have a range of 620 miles and a top speed of over 250 miles an hour.

Tesla claims the electric costs of the Semi are half that of a traditional diesel semi truck, thanks to fewer systems to maintain (no transmission or brake pads to name a few), providing a number of over $200,000 Dollars in fuel savings, and a two-year payback period.

The new Roadster will be produced in 2020 with a minimum price tag of $200,000.

In his presentation, Musk said the cost of operating an electric tractor-trailer would be $1.26 per mile, compared with $1.51 per mile in a diesel truck.

Tesla shares are up 51.46% this year.

Musk - who has vowed to take humans to Mars in the next few years - has become famous for his futuristic visions, which also include a supersonic "Hyperloop" train under Los Angeles that would travel at over 200mph.

But truck drivers may still have some reservations.

Also unique to the Semi is the driver's seating position.

Although Thursday night's event celebrated Tesla's largest and smallest new offerings, the company is grappling with how to smooth problems that have hit its flagship Model 3.

The auto will be available in 2020 with a starting price of $200,000, which The Verge notes might be a bargain as the only now comparable cars on the market start at around $1 million. The anemic number fell far short of expectations; the company had received 140,000 advance orders for the auto within hours of it being announced in the spring of 2016. In addition, he surprised everyone with the debut of an updated Tesla Roadster. Elon Musk recently described it as "production hell". These are just concept vehicles, really, but it's Tesla, and nothing is really ever as it seems.
