Brazilian footballer Robinho has reportedly been sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of sexual assault.

However, Robinho, who now plays for Atletico Mineiro in the Brazilian league, has the opportunity to appeal the verdict under Italian law.

He had denied the charges, but was found guilty in absentia by an Italian court.

A statement posted on his Instagram from his legal team said: "Regarding the news involving the striker Robinho, in an incident that occurred several years ago, we wish to clarify that he already declared his innocence and maintained he had no involvement whatsoever".

The former AC Milan and Manchester City forward has been convicted of being one of six people involved in the assault of a 22-year-old woman at a Milanese nightclub on January 22, 2013. He is now with Atletico Mineiro and made his last appearance for the national team against Colombia in January.

Robinho had previously been accused of sexual assault during his City days, but was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing.
