The coalition imposed a total blockade of Yemen's ports and airports two days after the Houthis fired a missile at Saudi Arabia on November 4. The blockade intensified after Saudi authorities intercepted a long-range missile, which they said had Iranian markings, near Riyadh airport.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting rebels in Yemen has pledged to reopen the country's main airport, as well as two main ports.

The Saudi-led coalition's blockade of Yemen, which has cut off food imports to a population where 7 million people are on the brink of starvation, is "illegal collective punishment" of civilians, a prominent aid official said on Thursday.

In a statement, coalition officials said that it would reopen the ports and airport to receive "urgent humanitarian and relief materials" starting midday on Thursday (0900 UTC).

"We're monitoring these developments", Haq told reporters in NY.

"Of course, if that were to happen that would be a very welcome and critically important development".

The UN says a continuation of the two-week blockade would make Yemen's war-battered population more vulnerable to cholera and starvation.

Since November 4th; there have been 82 permits issued to facilitate entry and aid distribution into Yemen: 40 permits through sea ports and 42 permits through airports.

"It is good news", said Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations humanitarian chief for Yemen.

Allied with Yemeni strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels control the capital Sanaa along with much of northern Yemen.

Saudi Arabia said the move was meant to stop the flow of arms to the Houthis from Iran, although Iran has denied supplying weapons to the rebel forces.

The United Nations says some 7 million Yemenis are on the brink of starvation and 945,000 have been infected since April with cholera.

More than 8,750 people have since been killed.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says Yemen is highly dependent on imported wheat for its basic needs.
