  • Brussels braces for Brexit make-or-break day

Officials from the Democratic Unionist Party are considering pulling their support of the ruling Conservative Party, depending on how Brexit affects the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

London's proposal would allow "Regulatory Convergence" or the adoption of European Union industry standards by Northern Ireland to continue in an attempt to minimize the disruption of trade between it and the Republic of Ireland.

MPs have said a return of border checks between the Republic of Ireland and the north seems "inevitable" after Britain leaves the European Union.

Theresa May's plan for a "light-touch" border using technology is "untested and to some extent speculative", its report added.

However, the British Government has insisted that the United Kingdom will leave both the customs union and the single market - while the DUP has said it will not accept any solution that keeps the North within either arrangement while the rest of the United Kingdom remains without.

Right now, the U.K.'s government is being propped up by a small party from Northern Ireland.

United Kingdom government ministers have suggested technology could enable a "frictionless border", but the Irish government - with the backing of European Union member states - says it is not persuaded by British assurances that a hard border will not return.

The border between EU-member Ireland and the British region of Northern Ireland will be the UK's only land frontier with the bloc after Brexit, and Dublin fears a hard border could disrupt 20 years of delicate peace in Northern Ireland.

The DUP yesterday warned that allowing Northern Ireland to remain in the single market alone would be "deeply destablising" to the coalition agreement.

In fact, both Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to remain in the European Union by margins of 55.8% and 62% respectively.
