The governing council also decided that an IPL Franchise is eligible to secure up to 5 players by virtue of a combination of Player Retention (Pre Player Auction) and Right to Match (RTM) (During the Player Auction).

The Governing Council meeting was attended by the members of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). At least 75 percent of the salary cap will have to be spent during each season.

- If a team retains just one player, INR 12.5 crore will be deducted from the purse. The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council has made a decision to raise the salary cap for the eight franchises for next year's edition to Rs 80 crore from the previous cap of Rs 66 crore.

According to the regulations, each franchise will be allowed a maximum of five players to be retained through a combination of player retention and Right To Match (RTM) cards.

When news filtered in on Wednesday on IPL player retention, there was relief and joy in the Chennai Super Kings camp. The guideline is if a franchise retains three players it will have Rs 15 crore, Rs 11 crore and Rs 7 crore respectively deducted from its player purse of Rs 80 crores.

A maximum of either three retentions or three RTM at the discretion of the franchises has been allowed. The team also played in the IPL final in 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2015. It will grow by Rs 2 crore and Rs 3 crore for the next two editions respectively.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to be an even bigger juggernaut next year, with the eight teams likely spending anywhere between Rs 480 crore and Rs 640 crore on players alone.
