KIEV, Ukraine - Mikheil Saakashvili, the former Georgian president turned opposition leader in Ukraine, walked free Monday after a court in the Ukrainian capital refused to sanction his arrest, vowing to push for a peaceful government change.

"I consider myself a prisoner of Ukrainian oligarchs", Saakashvili said in an apparent reference to Poroshenko, a chocolate-and-candy tycoon who critics say has not sufficiently divested himself of his business interests.

Judge Larysa Tsokol told Kyiv's Pechera district court that the prosecutors' request to put Saakashvili under house arrest pending trial was "dismissed", prompting applause by Saakashvili's supporters in the courtroom.

Trump Blames Democrats for Stoking Sexual Misconduct Allegations
The press secretary was unable to provide any evidence to discredit the allegations, instead relying on Trump's denials. The statement dismissed the allegations as part of a "publicity tour" and said they were driven by "political motives".

The court's verdict marked a defeat for Poroshenko, who has faced mounting criticism for his failure to uproot endemic corruption.

Saakashvili told journalists after the hearing that he plans to continue his political activities with the goal of "constitutional, calm, but very necessary transfer of power in the country", accusing the Ukrainian authorities of corruption and "usurping power".

Saakashvili, whose supporters last week hindered authorities seeking to arrest him, has denied the allegations and had gone on a hunger strike to protest his arrest.

Saakashvili, the 49-year-old leader of Ukraine's Movement of New Forces opposition party, was arrested on December 9 in a Kiev apartment on charges, including a cooperation with a criminal organisation.

Shortly after the hearing, Saakashvili met with his supporters waiting in front of the court building.

On Sunday, thousands of Mr Saakashvili's supporters marched across Kiev, demanding his release and calling for Mr Poroshenko to be impeached.

Mr Saakashvili lost the Georgian presidency in 2013 but was appointed governor of the Odessa region of Ukraine two years...

Saakashvili was earlier stripped of Ukraine's citizenship, but he managed to illegally enter the country.
