  • Apple Awards $390 Million to FaceID Tech Company Finisar

Reuters reports that the Finisar deal not only guarantees future supply of a vital component for the iPhone X and its successors, but also makes it more hard for other smartphone manufacturers to compete. VCSELs power some of Apple's most popular new features, including Face ID, Animoji and Portrait mode selfies made possible with the iPhone X TrueDepth camera, as well as the proximity-sensing capabilities of AirPods. It's rumored that some of next years iPhone's will have Face ID included.

"VCSELs power some of the most sophisticated technology we've ever developed, and we're thrilled to partner with Finisar over the next several years to push the boundaries of VCSEL technology and the applications they enable", Apple COO Jeff Williams said in a press release.

Shares of Finisar leaped nearly 30% at the opening bell Wednesday. The Texas plant build also falls in line with Apple's Advanced Manufacturing Fund which is meant to encourage job creation in the U.S.

Apple has announced an investment worth $390 million in Finisar, the US-based tech firm that produces the vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers or VCSEL that powers the Face ID feature of iPhone X. The amount would be spent in furthering R&D effort on this front while also setting up a new plant in Sherman, Texas that would be producing the VCSELs.

KEITH: Salvation Army puts donations to use

President Donald Trump is among the public figures pushing for Apple to move at least some of its manufacturing business to the United States.

Finisar CEO Jerry S. Rawls said the company was "excited" to continue working with Apple.

It's not unusual for Apple to finance its suppliers.

Once refurbished, Finisar's plant in Sherman, Texas will offer jobs for more than 500 high-skilled workers, including technicians, engineers, and maintenance teams.

Apple announced its $1 billion Advanced Manufacturing Fund back in May as a commitment to help American manufacturers innovate and create more jobs.

Hiring, capital equipment planning and infrastructure upgrades are already underway at the Sherman facility, which is expected to begin shipping in the second half of 2018.

Face ID uses a TrueDepth front-facing camera on the iPhone X, which has multiple components. That's an impressive investment in a critical supplier, following the $200 million that Apple awarded to Corning in May from the same fund.

It will only unlock your device when you look in the direction of the iPhone X with your eyes open.
