Moore, a far-right former state Supreme Court judge who was accused of harassing and assaulting multiple underage girls in the 1970s, lost to Doug Jones, the first Democrat elected to an Alabama Senate seat in a quarter century. Democrats, on the other hand, are anxious that his political posturing could delay Jones' arrival to the Senate, where he could be a key vote against the GOP tax bill.

After Mr Moore's embarrassing loss, Representative Peter King, a New York Republican, vented his frustration, saying Mr Bannon looked "like some dishevelled drunk who wandered on to the political stage", and "is not the type of person we need in politics".

Controversial Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama still refused to concede defeat late on Wednesday, saying he would wait for the "final count" of the votes, which could take until the beginning of January.

Explosion Rocks Central Manhattan: Four Injured, Suspect in Custody
Police Commissioner Paul O'Neill said the suspect "made statements" regarding terror group Isis but declined to comment further. On October 30, a man drove his rented truck down a cycle path along the Hudson River, killing eight and injuring 11 others.

"I'm not sure what his posturing is about, other than it keeps him in the limelight and it keeps him relevant for another week", Sewell said.

As the battle plays out in states including Nevada, Arizona and Kentucky, Mr John Geer, who chairs Vanderbilt University's political science department, said of Mr Bannon: "He is willing to lose some elections to leave his stamp on the party".

Estimates indicate that Jones won by about 1.5 percent, or 20,000 votes. State laws say that a recount only is needed if the margin is within half a percentage point.

S.African court blasts Zuma over graft inquiry report
On Friday, the top court ruled that Zuma's appointment of a state prosecutor was not valid and should be set aside immediately. Zuma's ruling African National Congress welcomed the court decision.

"It is hard to believe McConnell will learn from Alabama and challenge the Republican candidates in these races to stand up to the likes of Roy Moore rather than cower to the base that isn't showing up for them anyway". The theory was debunked by Snopes, as was a rumor that vans of illegal voters were in Alabama voting for Jones.

The theories are mainly being pushed by conservative websites and among Republican voters, but they also are impacting Moore himself.

Weeks before the vote, a number of women had come forth, claiming that they had been sexually harassed by Moore when they were younger. He has maintained that he is not guilty of any misconduct, and since losing the election has doubled down on his claims that there is a political plot created to take him down.
