  • A Canadian Billionaire And His Wife Were Found Found Dead In Their Home

Police are investigating the deaths of Toronto billionaire Barry Sherman and his wife, Honey, as a murder-suicide.

Mr Sherman had set up the pharmaceutical company Apotex in 1974, stepping down as chief executive in 2012 but remaining executive chairman.

Sherman acquired the company named Empire Laboratories - the predecessor of Apotex - from his uncle after the death of the latter.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was "saddened by news of the sudden passing". Canadian Business magazine recently listed him as the 15th richest person in Canada, with a net worth of $4.77 billion.

Police found out about the Shermans' deaths at about midday Friday, while responding to an emergency call.

Homicide detective David Hopkinson said: "The circumstances of their death appear suspicious and we are treating it that way".

The Shermans had just put their house on Old Colony Road up for sale for $6.9-million.

The deaths are being investigated.

The Globe and Mail cited a police source as saying the Shermans' bodies were found hanging from a railing around a basement pool, the theory being that "Mr Sherman killed his wife, hung her body and then hanged himself at the pool's edge".

Hopkinson would not confirm that the bodies are of Barry Sherman and his wife Honey Sherman.

Investigators are still attempting to "determine if there is foul play involved or not", Detective Brandon Price told reporters, "and at this point we can not say 100% with certainty if there is or there is not".

"I am beyond words right now". Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in healthcare. "Barry, Honey, rest in peace", Dr. Eric Hoskins posted on Twitter Friday afternoon. He grew the company through the introduction of large numbers of generic, low-costing drugs that were able to take market share away from the branded pharmaceuticals.

The Shermans, who had four children, were major donors to hospitals, universities and Jewish organisations.

Honey, who also graduated from the University of Toronto, was a member of the board of the Baycrest Foundation and the York University Foundation. She said that she last saw them two weeks ago, when they had an open house - and could not imagine anything like this happening to a pair she described as the "best neighbours" and the pride of the neighbourhood. They also had close ties to the Jewish community as they donated roughly $50 million to the United Jewish Appeal - a Jewish philanthropic umbrella organization that later changed its name to the Jewish Federations of North America.

Police said later Friday evening that they are not now seeking any suspects but are keeping an open mind on all possibilities.
