  • NBC Made Payment To Staffer After Sexual Harassment Claim Against Chris Matthews

TV "Hardball" host Chris Matthews was reprimanded after he was accused in 1999 of making inappropriate comments about a female employee, and the woman was given a separation payment, MSNBC said on Sunday.

An NBC spokesperson told The Daily Caller that the network paid a smaller, unspecified amount as part of a severance package.

The Daily Caller reported the woman received $40,000 to settle the matter.

The woman worked as an assistant producer on "Hardball with Chris Matthews", which at the time was on CNBC, according to the Daily Caller, which first reported the allegation.

It is not clear whether Matthews' accuser left the company as a result of the allegations, although she has consequently gone on to work in a number of high-profile media positions.

He is the latest in a string of high-profile men in media to be accused of sexual misconduct, particularly at NBC. News later published an acknowledgment that executives reprimanded Matthews after an internal review, which found that his remarks "were inappropriate and in made in poor taste but were never meant as propositions".

The story brings to mind previous on-air comments made by Matthews that were sexual in nature. He also hosted "The Chris Matthews Show" on the network after the settlement from 2002 to 2013.
