A senior White House official claimed North Korea was responsible for a cyberattack that paralyzed hospitals, banks and companies worldwide in May.

North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported, "There is no change in our stance that we will not budge an inch in our march toward strengthening our nuclear force". "The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea is directly responsible", wrote Bossert. The official said they had a "very high level of confidence" that hacking outfit Lazarus Group carried out the attack on behalf of the North Korean government. The malware targeted several hospitals in the United Kingdom, as well as banks and various other infrastructures and companies worldwide, causing malfunctions in critical sectors.

"Malicious hackers belong in prison, and totalitarian governments should pay a price for their actions", he wrote, adding "The tool kits of totalitarian regimes are too threatening to ignore". He also noted that Microsoft did make efforts to disrupt activities by North Korean hackers last week, but Bossert didn't elaborate.
