The government has chose to add a new layer of protection to the already existing two tiers of missile defences, the Maritime Self-Defense Force's Aegis destroyers equipped with Standard Missile-3 interceptors and the Air Self-Defense Force's ground-based Patriot Advanced Capability-3 interceptors.

"In addition to another step towards the creation of a full-fledged segment of the United States global missile defense in the Asia-Pacific Region, this also implies a risk for Japan to obtain a qualitatively new military potential, because universal vertical launch systems of Aegis Ashore complex are capable of using strike weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles".

On Tuesday, the government of Japan approved the decision to deploy two Aegis Ashore anti-missile defense complexes in the country.

Japan is to boost its ability to counter the "serious and imminent" threat posed by North Korea's ballistic missiles with the deployment of ground-based interceptors bought from the US. However, Japanese media reports suggest the systems could be in place at Japan Ground Self-Defense Force bases in Akita and Yamaguchi prefectures sometime around 2023.

Japanese defense officials also considered purchasing the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, another USA -built anti-missile system, but chose the Aegis Ashore due to its cost-effectiveness.

Separately, Minister of Defence Itsunori Onodera said this month Japan would acquire medium-range cruise missiles it can launch from its F-15 and F-35 fighters at sites in North Korea, in a bid to deter any attack.
