The Clear ID fingerprint sensors are designed for smartphones with bezel-less infinity displays that incorporate a button-less experience, Synaptics said.
Vivo, a little-known Chinese phone maker, will apparently be one of the first to launch a smartphone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor. Until now, such sensors had to be deployed using separate physical buttons rather than being seamlessly integrated into the phones' displays.
Vivo is indeed a "top five" smartphone OEM, at least, according to IDC, the company comes after Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi, in terms of shipment results in the third quarter of 2017. An in-display fingerprint sensor will definitely make more sense than an awkwardly placed rear fingerprint sensor seen on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.
Apple recently abandoned its fingerprint scanner in favour of Face ID, partly because the new iPhone X has no space for a home button.
And all it will take to unlock a device is one quick touch of the sensor, from nearly any angle. "The sensor is also sturdy-both scratchproof and waterproof since it is protected by glass". Synaptics claims that its in-house technology is as faster alternative biometrics such as 3D facial recognition like Apple's Face ID and is highly secured.
In-display fingerprint scanning represents "a major innovation shift and opportunity for the smartphone market", said Kevin Barber, senior vice president and general manager of Synaptics' mobile division, in the statement.
In-screen fingerprint sensors have been considered as a natural evolution of modern biometric sensors as the smartphone displays this year moved to an edge-to-edge concept. "It is big for Synaptics, but even bigger for the smartphone industry and consumers". In an article for Forbes, Moorhead confirmed Vivo would be first to use the tech. He added that Synaptics expects to sell around 70 million units of the Clear ID technology in 2018.
Synaptics is planning a demonstration for January 2018 on a full-production, soon to be announced "tier one" customer phone.
