  • European Union court sides with taxis in Uber ruling

Ride hailing phone app Uber is a taxi service and can be regulated, an EU Court has ruled. "It also points out that Uber exercises decisive influence over the conditions under which the drivers provide their service".

The decision stems from a complaint by a Barcelona taxi drivers association, which wanted to prevent Uber from setting up in the Spanish city.

"This ruling will not change things in most European Union countries where we already operate under transportation law", an Uber spokeswoman said.

The ruling from Europe's highest court found that Uber "must be regarded as being inherently linked to a transport service and, accordingly, must be classified as "a service in the field of transport".

But Uber insists the ruling won't affect how the company operates."This ruling will not change things in most European Union countries where we already operate under transportation law", an Uber spokesperson said, in a statement shared with Gizmodo and other outlets.

AT&T says GOP tax bill will mean $1000 bonuses for 200000 employees
The House passed the $1.5 trillion tax bill on Wednesday on a 224-201 vote, sending the legislation to the White House for Mr. As BuzzFeed pointed out, the company made the same announcement in 2011, also alongside a president - Barack Obama.

The judgement came for a court case originates which from legal action filed by Elite Taxi, a Barcelona-based association of taxi drivers who claimed Uber was Uber for operating its low-priced Uberpop service without the necessary taxi licences and authorisation from the city.

Rachel Farr, a Taylor Wessing employment, pensions and mobility professional support lawyer, said the ECJ's decision was "bound to make the forthcoming appeal harder for Uber by removing one possible argument it may choose to run". The verdict is a long-awaited judgment expected to have major implications for how Uber is regulated throughout Europe.

He said Uber will "keep talking with EU governments to enable affordable transportation services for millions more Europeans".

Tho said rapid technology development was posing challenges to State management agencies due to confusion in defining whether Uber and Grab were technology platforms connecting passengers with drivers or transportation companies. Therefore, Uber argued, it should not be regulated like a cab company.

She added: "Their drivers are not commodities".

Some key quotes after ethics watchdog's ruling that Trudeau broke conflict rules
Dawson said Aga Khan developed a friendship with Trudeau's father in the late 1960s but is not a friend of the current president. The vacations are gifts under the conflict of interest regimes that Dawson administers.

That could ultimately have an impact, not just on ride-hailing services, but on other gig economy services - such as couriers and accommodation providers - who operate a similar model. They deserve at the very least the minimum wage and holiday pay. Advances in technology should be used to make work better.

2017 just isn't Uber's year.

Harford has worked for and competed with Khosrowshahi, 48, in the online travel business.

Harford, who sits on the board of airline company United Continental Holdings Inc., will oversee global ride-hailing operations, marketing, customer support, and the company's food-delivery business. They also charged Uber with "misleading practices".

"It's a precedent and a door-opener for online innovators to be to be subjected to national or sectoral rules in the future", said Jakob Kucharczyk of the Computer and Communications Industry Association.
