The new tool, which first made its entry last November, is designed with features that will help you discover if you were inadvertently used by the so-called Russian propaganda loyalists to spread fake news.

The agency is seen as a Russian resource for spreading propaganda online, and almost 150 million Facebook and Instagram users may have seen paid ads and organic posts distributed by the Kremlin-linked organization in St. Petersburg.

Some promoted the candidacy of Donald Trump and criticized his Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton.

The data on Instagram is on top of the estimated 126 million Americans exposed to Facebook posts from Russian entities seeking to create divisions during the election campaign.

Last September, Facebook had in an official statement indicted Russian Federation of influencing the 2016 United States election won by President Donald Trump.

Some people, such as Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, have suggested that Russian Federation purchased the ads not only to help Trump's campaign, but also in an attempt to inflame existing political tensions within the U.S. The tool also works for the social media giant's other big site, Instagram.

Facebook has been criticized for being slow the acknowledge the extent to which its platform was used by Russian Federation during the 2016 election. More than 3,000 ads posted on Facebook during the election were tied to Russian accounts.

But the company reversed course in September, with Facebook's chief security officer acknowledging in a blog post that roughly 3,000 ads that appeared on the network in 2016 were paid for by firms that "likely operated out of Russian Federation".

"Do you not also have an obligation to let those folks know that that was a hoax, that - or at least inform them who was behind that sponsored advertisement", Rep. (D-Ala.) asked Facebook's general counsel Colin Stretch during the November House hearing.

The tool, available here, details Facebook's action plan for "protecting legitimate political discussion within our community and fighting foreign interference in elections".

Facebook general counsel Colin Stretch told a hearing that Instagram posts by suspect Russian accounts were seen by some 20 million Americans a year ago.
