"Pursuant to the authority vested in the Commission by the Constitution and the new election law of the Republic of Liberia, and based on the results just read, I, acting on behalf of the board of commissioners, do hereby declare the presidential ticket of senator George Weah and Jewel Howard-Taylor as the victor from the December 26, 2017 presidential run-off election", board president Jerome Korkoya said.

The congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued Friday by Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media & publicity.

Celebrations have begun in Liberia as former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah is set to be declared the victor of the West African nation's presidential election.

Reports say the former AC Milan striker is all but the victor of Tuesday's run-off, as he now leads incumbent vice-president Joseph Boakai with more than 60 per cent of the votes.

The electoral board confirmed Weah's run-off victory on Friday evening, as his rival, Vice President Joseph Boakai, conceded defeat. He played for top local clubs before starting his worldwide career in Cameroon, then moved on to AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, where he became famous.

He is set to take office in January.

While with AC Milan, Weah in 1995 won World Player of the Year. Macron invited him to visit, saying Weah had "a special place in the French's hearts".

The results were almost identical to those announced on Thursday evening by the commission after 98 percent of returns.
