The streaming platform teased the new show's January 12 launch in a tweet with a lineup topped by the former United States leader: "Obama".

Other guests expected on Letterman's new six-episode Netflix series will include, George Clooney, Malala Yousafazai, Jay-Z, Tina Fey, and Howard Stern.

Veteran former US talk show host David Letterman will return to television on January 12 in a new Netflix show where his first guest will be former US President Barack Obama, Netflix Inc. said on Friday.

Netflix said the new series would consist of 60-minute episodes centred around "one extraordinary figure whom Dave finds fascinating" and that the interviews would take place both inside and outside a studio setting. The host has been off television since leaving CBS' "The Late Show" in 2015.

Letterman's Worldwide Pants production company is teaming with RadicalMedia for the series, which Letterman says is a welcome back to the spotlight after his lengthy "Late Show" run.
