Key Indian opposition leader Lalu Prasad Yadav was jailed Saturday for three and a half years over his role in a multi-million dollar corruption case.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted by the court on December 23, 2017, in a Rs 950 crore fodder scam case. The Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ranchi also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief.

Yadav, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was convicted in a first fodder scam case in 2013 and sentenced to five years in jail.

Last month the anti-corruption court found Yadav guilty of fraudulently withdrawing almost $140,000 from the state treasury in a larger fraud dubbed the "fodder scam", which was worth about 10 billion rupees ($157 million).

Other convicts - Phool Chand, Mahesh Prasad, Bake Julious, Sunil Kumar, Sushil Kumar, Sudhir Kumar and Raja Ram - have also been sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and Rs 5 lakh fine each.

He was convicted by the court on December 23, 2017, and has been lodged in Birsa Munda prison since then. "If he fails to deposit the penalty money, it will amount to six more months of imprisonment to him", Prabhat Kumar, counsel for Lalu Prasad told media persons. The case pertained to fraudulent withdrawal of ₹84.5 lakh from the Deoghar district (now in Jharkhand) treasury during the period 1991-94.

In 1996, the Patna High Court had ordered an inquiry into the fodder scam cases and a charge sheet in the Deogarh Treasury case was filed against 38 people on October 27, 1997.
