President Donald Trump announced the decision on Wednesday but still made the unsubstantiated claim that fraudulent activity occurred during the election.

The president also tackled developments over North Korea in his Thursday morning tweets - coming after he caused a stir by boasting about the size of his "nuclear button" compared with Kim Jong Un's.

The president disbanded the controversial panel focused on "election integrity", blaming a refusal by more than a dozen states to provide what he called "basic information". "They fought hard that the Commission not see their records or methods because they know that many people are voting illegally", he posted just after 6 a.m. "Push hard for Voter Identification!"

The prospect of DHS leading a new probe into voter fraud is raising alarm bells among voting rights groups, who warn it could lead to people being wrongly accused of fraud and purged from the voter rolls. Several states refused to provide the commission with requested voter information, which prevented it from performing its job.

To date, no federal laws have been put in place to limit voting rights and the courts have soundly rejected numerous state restrictions.

That would be a step in the right direction. "Next thing you know, (James) is running down the sidelines", Gruden said. Big surprise: Teams with good quarterbacks make playoff runs; teams without good quarterbacks don't make the playoffs.

A judge on December 22 had ordered the commission to provide Dunlap with some of the materials he had requested.

And the initial statement said "rather than engage in endless legal battles at taxpayer expense, today I signed an executive order to dissolve the Commission". "It was that scrutiny that was forced upon the commission that successfully led to the need for transparency which caused the commission to fail", he said, promising that the administration's new tactic won't go unchallenged by the civil rights community.

From the start, critics had called the commission a sham and civil rights and good-government groups sued.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., recently upheld part of a claim by one commission member, Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, a Democrat, that he had been illegally excluded from its deliberations.

"It's no coincidence that the president dissolved the commission once it became clear it wouldn't be permitted to operate in the shadows", American Oversight Executive Director Austin Evers said in the statement.

The flyer was reportedly cooperative with the flight crew and remained seated after his bathroom escapades were stopped.

"He has a right to access documents that the commission is considering relying on in the course of developing its final recommendations", U.S. District Jude Colleen Kollar-Kotelly wrote in her ruling last month, the Los Angeles Times reported at the time.

Still stinging from losing the popular vote in last year's presidential election, Trump and his voter suppression allies are only backing up to take a running start at preventing some Americans from legally exercising their right to vote.

The commission's vice chairman, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, said the work done by DHS is likely to be less public. Its last known meeting was September 12. Three other Democrats on the 11-member commission expressed similar concerns, but only Dunlap filed suit.

"Lags in updating databases once people attain citizenship plus poor matching procedures can dramatically inflate allegations of noncitizen voting, perhaps enough to please Trump", tweeted University of Florida political scientist Michael McDonald.

This is a developing story.
