Iran stages pro-government rallies, derides Trump 'blunder' at UN

The United States faced criticism at the UN Security Council on Friday for convening the body to discuss recent protests in Iran.

While Russia believes the UN Security Council has no business getting involved, British ambassador Matthew Rycroft said it was "right and proper - indeed, our responsibility to assess whether a situation like this could become a threat to worldwide peace and security".

Protesters in Germany called on the German government and the worldwide community to condemn what they called "mass killings" on the streets of Iran.

The Trump administration should not only stop threatening the country with more sanctions, but should also let the Iranian people decide their internal affairs for themselves.

Chelsea held by second-tier Norwich
The first half was an unforgettably forgettable one, with neither keeper being properly tested. We tried to win the game but we must accept the final result .

Echoing Iran's concern that the demonstrations were fueled by outside powers to promote regime change, Bolivia reminded world powers that "unilateral action, political interventionism, and regime change only ever lead to devastating humanitarian, social and economic consequences".

Following recent unrests in certain parts of Iran, US Representative to the UN Nikki Haley in a speech to reporters at the UN headquarters on January 2 accused Iran of violating human rights and freedom of expression and said Washington was after sessions on Iran by UNSC in NY and UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people have attended pro-government rallies in recent days.

"We must be wary of any attempt to exploit this crisis for personal ends", France's Permanent Representative Francois Delattre said, adding that the Council must commit to upholding the nuclear agreement. The CIA declined to comment. They also called on the Iranian government to take serious steps in releasing protesters and opposition members who have been arrested.

The president has tweeted to commend the protests, expressing "such respect for the people of Iran as they try to take back their corrupt government" and pledged "great support from the United States".

I agree with Roger Cohen that the Trump administration "should stop berating the nuclear deal".

He said Iran had already violated the 2015 deal, which imposed curbs on Iran's nuclear capability in return for easing worldwide embargoes. He refused this past fall to certify Iran's compliance with the pact and said the benefits to Iran were disproportionate to the concessions it made. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said more sanctions "targeting human rights abuses are coming".
