In a special election on Tuesday, Democrat Patty Schachtner won the state's 10th Senate District, which had voted heavily for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. "Hard to overstate the anxiety this will cause", tweeted conservative radio host Charlie Sykes, while on the left, Democrats and progressives celebrated snatching a seat held by the G.O.P. for 17 years.
Schachtner said Tuesday night that in spite of high expectations, even she was surprised by the 9 percentage point win.
Schachtner, who will be sworn in February 13 in Madison, also said her message calling for treatment for people suffering from addiction and more access to mental and physical health care resonated with 10th District voters. Inspiring young people to move to our region for recreation, thriving local business, and broadband capabilities will bring more teachers and other professionals. "Right now, when you look at issues out there on a national scale, Democratic values are Wisconsin values", state Democratic Party spokeswoman Melanie Conklin said.
In Wisconsin's 10 District, that overperformance resulted in a Democratic pickup (points colored in dark blue), but Republicans have been underperforming in many seats that they still managed to hold (colored pink). In South Carolina's 99th House District, Democrat Cindy Boatwright lost with 43 percent of the vote; the party had not run a candidate for the seat in this decade. As the chief medical examiner for St. Croix County, and a former first responder, Schachtner said she never once asked someone their political affiliation before providing care, and she doesn't care to do so now. "The results from today show that Wisconsin is ready for a change in Madison".
Schachtner attributed her victory to the positive tone of her campaign amid negative mailers from outside the state. "That happens to people all the time", Schachtner says.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker called the loss "a wake-up call for Republicans".

He did not blame Trump by name, but said there is "frustration overall" with Washington. Schachtner overwhelmingly won St. Croix, Pierce and Dunn counties, while Jarchow carried Polk and Burnett counties.
Mr Barker noted that Democratic voters have been "disproportionately and unusually motivated" to turn out in elections in traditionally Republican states or districts.
Postlewaite said Schachtner's election is a good sign for Democrats but cautioned anyone drawing conclusions that "a lot can happen between now and November".
