Hours after Rex Tillerson made his case for an indefinite U.S. troop presence in Syria, the secretary of state walked to the back of his plane and took questions from a BuzzFeed News reporter: Did he just commit the United States to new multi-front war in the Middle East? Washington has 2,000 USA ground forces in the country.

Tillerson said free, transparent elections in which the Syrian diaspora participate "will result in the permanent departure of Assad and his family from power".

"The top USA diplomat said Washington would carry out "stabilization initiatives" such as clearing landmines and restoring basic utilities in areas no longer under Islamic State control, while making clear that "'stabilization' is not a synonym for open-ended nation-building or a synonym for reconstruction.

Yildirim says: "The U.S. must eliminate the confusion and change its stance in favor of peace and improving relations with Turkey".

Russia, which, together with Iran, has supported the Syrian regime during the civil war, has deep military and economic interests in Syria and maintains a powerful military presence there.

"It is a great tool when it's used well", Tillerson said. Tillerson said he wants more cooperation with pro-Assad Russian forces in Syria to avoid violence in "de-escalation zones".

"As a destabilized nation and one bordering Israel, Syria presents an opportunity that Iran is all too eager to exploit", Tillerson said. "But it is essential". The Syrian Foreign Ministry statement said the government was not in need of USA dollars "stained with the blood of Syrians".

Speaking at Stanford University after being introduced by former top diplomat Condoleezza Rice, Tillerson said the Trump administration was determined not to repeat President Barack Obama's "mistake" when he withdrew US troops from Iraq in 2011. United Nations special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura announced Wednesday that the U.N. would host the Syrian government and opposition for peace talks in Vienna on January 25 and 26.

"It's full of holes like Swiss cheese, but before we just had the holes", said Jeffrey, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. The U.S. has at least 2,000 troops in Syria, according to figures the Pentagon released in December.

Backed by Russian Federation and Iran, Assad has reasserted control over much of Syria.

The source added that the United States presence and all what the U.S. administration has done are "aimed at protecting the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist organization" which has been created by the USA administration, Syria's official news agency, SANA, reported.

Turkey, which regards the US-backed YPG militia as a faction of the outlawed Kurdish separatist PKK and thus a terrorist group, reacted with fury and vowed to destroy the new unit. "No border force' Tillerson denied Washington had any intention to build a security force at the Syria-Turkey border".
