Amazon increases monthly Prime membership fee

The price increase takes effect immediately for new members, and on February 19 for existing members.

Customers who pay for Amazon Prime in monthly installments will see a pretty significant jump in costs.

Amazon said Friday that the cost of a monthly Prime membership will go from $10.99 to to $12.99, up 18%.

Prices for annual Prime memberships remain unchanged, at $99 per year for regular customers, and $49 per year for students.

They are highly lucrative for the company because free shipping and the other perks that come with membership mean Prime members spend more on the platform. That plan also includes Amazon Prime free two-day shipping, video and music streaming services, Prime Reading and unlimited photo storage with Prime Photos.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is getting set to raise the price of its wildly popular Prime service for certain US customers, according to a new report.

According to Variety, the tech company is upping its price from $10.99 per month to $12.99 per month, an 18 percent increase.

Amazon boasted of record holiday sales, putting a spotlight on Prime subscribers with its "Best of Prime 2017".
