"We are emailing notifications to 677,775 people in the U.S. who followed one of these accounts or retweeted or liked a Tweet from these accounts during the election period", Twitter said, adding that it has already suspended these accounts.

The email alert came as the company revealed more information about their internal investigation regarding Russia's role on Twitter during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Twitter has identified an additional 1,062 accounts associated with the Russia-backed Internet Research Agency (IRA) accused of interfering with the 2016 USA presidential election.

Appearing before the USA commerce, science and technology committee this week, Carlos Monje, Twitter's director of U.S. public policy, said Twitter would "inform individually" everyone who saw tweets from accounts linked to IRA.

The social media company tried to downplay Twitter users' engagement with the Russian accounts saying: "Most user engagement was with a very small number of IRA-associated accounts". "At the request of congressional investigators, we are also sharing those account handles with Congress".

"We have identified an additional 1,062 accounts associated with the IRA".

Monje, along with officials from Facebook and Google-owned YouTube, testified before the committee about how Twitter is combating terror-related content on its platform.

Initially, Twitter said there were 200 accounts linked to the group but it told Congress last fall that it had identified 2,752 accounts linked to the group.

Twitter also handed over information to Congress on automated, election-related activity coming from Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign.

These accounts sent more than 175,000 tweets, the company said.

The site also wants to put in new safeguards ahead of the 2018 elections, including verifying the accounts of all major party candidates running for federal and state offices, and monitoring trending topics to spot when bots are working to manipulate netizens' tweet feeds.

The social media platform said 677,775 USA users followed, retweeted or liked a tweet from accounts associated with the IRA during the election period.

Executives at Twitter said this week to lawmakers on Capitol Hill that it might notify those users about the propaganda by Russians.

The micro-blogging website said that, during the White House race, some 677,775 people followed accounts controlled by Russian propaganda groups, or liked or favorited their tweets. "You can see examples of content from these suspended accounts on our blog if you're interested".

The company also disclosed that they've found 50,258 additional automated accounts they've identified as "Russian-linked" that were tweeting "election-related content" during the election period.
