  • The president's base of support is still wildly skeptical of Hollywood and the media

Booker sharply questioned Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who said she could not recall Trump's reported reference to s-hole countries.

By comparison, in Obama's a year ago in office the United States led Germany by seven points, China by 17 points and Russian Federation by 22 points, according to Gallup.

In mid-December, that gap hit its widest point, with the percentage of those saying they disapproved being 21.1 points higher than those saying they approved. Republican senators John McCain and Jeff Flake both excoriated Trump this week for discrediting the free press and being unwilling to accept criticism, adding to the broad scrutiny of Trump's persistent struggles with the truth.

On Friday, NBC and the Wall Street Journal released data to the latter point. The first year of Donald Trump's presidency resulted in a rating that is even lower than the previous negative record achieved by George W. Bush.

Executives at Twitter said this week to lawmakers on Capitol Hill that it might notify those users about the propaganda by Russians.

Donald Trump is wrapping up a year in office with the lowest average approval rating of any elected president in his first year.

Gallup's poll found countries across the world seem most confident in Germany, which scored a 41 percent approval rating. One of the most significant declines in the confidence of U.S. global leadership was in the United Kingdom where it dropped by a massive 265 of the points.

Gallup conducted interviews between March and November 2017 with approximately 1,000 adults aged at least 15 years old.

According to Gallup, the median approval rating of US leadership overseas has slid from 48 to 30 percent since Trump took office.

The public vigil will begin at 7 p.m.in front of the Cougar Pride statue outside of Martin Stadium on Washington State's campus. Hilinski, the expected starter for the Cougars in 2018, was found dead from an apparent suicide on Tuesday afternoon.

"The losses in US leadership approval may have implications on USA influence overseas", the poll report continues. Had this dip happened now, at the time that people were gearing up for their first-year assessments, Trump's position would have looked even worse than it is.

Trump's planned wall across the frontier with Mexico as well as his crude comments about immigrants alienated many south of the border, while approval ratings in Canada, a long-term USA ally, fell from 60 percent to a mere 20 percent, the Gallup survey found. Younger Americans aren't as pleased with the first lady as the older generation; her biggest fans according to this poll, are over the age of 50. "His policies, they really haven't set in, so it's hard for him to make the case that any of his policies are generally positive for people, until they see more of the results".

But as the Gallup report notes, research has shown that public opinion in foreign countries affects their policies toward the United States.
