BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said, "It is a decision of the Election Commission (EC) and the President has accepted it".

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday had recommended to the President that twenty AAP MLAs should be disqualified from the Delhi Assembly.

Otherwise we would have been nothing.

Karnataka: Karnataka government appointed 11 MLAs and MLCs as parliamentary secretaries.

The AAP on Friday had said the recommendation was based on false allegations, alleging that the "BJP through its agents seriously compromises the prestige of the EC just to divert the attention of the nation from its all round failures".

The Congress also rejected AAP's claim that the EC had taken a unilateral decision to disqualify 20 of its MLAs.

Former president Pranab Mukherjee had refused to pass a bill to exempt parliamentary secretaries from the definition of office of profit.

It was displeased by the MLAs' conduct of telling the poll panel not to go ahead with the matter as the issue has been challenged in the HC. "Doors of HC & SC is open for us", said Lamba.

Earlier Supreme Court rulling had directed the state government over the appointment of Parliamentary Secretary on the ground that that such appointment is illeglal as it amount to the holding of office of profit. "And thus they could not have voted in the Rajya Sabha election", Delhi Congress President Ajay Maken told media persons here soon after President Ram Nath Kovind approved the disqualification. It is an act of Centre using constitutional institutions.

If AAP fails to get reprieve from the courts, Delhi will have bypolls for the 20 seats.

The Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, BJP's Vijender Gupta said, "Kejriwal should take moral responsibility for disqualification of his MLAs".

In June 2017, the EC rejected the MLAs pleas to drop the "office of profit" case against them and ruled that the disqualification proceedings against them will continue.
