A total of 30 children have died from influenza this flu season, including 10 new cases reported to the CDC as of January 13.

The flu virus was widespread in every state except for Hawaii as of January 13, according to health officials.

According to health experts, the country is seeing more of the H3N2 flu strain, which is known to cause more hospitalizations and deaths.

We've heard reports of at least a dozen legislators coming down with influenza - which has killed an estimated two dozen people in the Palmetto State over the past few months (including nine people last week). For example, people who work at schools are often at a higher risk.

And the end to all this misery may be far off: The flu season is expected to last for another 12 weeks.

So far, there seem to be enough hospital beds, vaccines and antiviral drugs, though some hospitals have anxious about running out of beds if the epidemic worsens, and some have reported shortages of IV bags, Plescia said.

Important response to the flu epidemic is threatened by the impending government shutdown. Norman Edelman, senior scientific advisor for the American Lung Association.

So far, there about 6 percent of people seeking medical care have flu symptoms, according to CDC records. Swine influenza has not been shown to be transmissible to people through eating properly handled and prepared pork (pig meat) or other products derived from pigs.

The CDC is still encouraging people to get a flu shot if they haven't received one. But Australia's experience suggests effectiveness was only about 10 percent.

Vaccination remains the best method of protection.

"The last shutdown, it was in October, which wasn't the height of flu season", explained the employee".

· We continue to recommend the flu vaccine.

The flu is highly contagious, and can be passed on by those who have it before they know they are sick, while they are sick and for several days after their symptoms first present.

Anti-virals like Tamiflu are effective in lessening the symptoms of H3N2, but are most effective if administered within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

The New York City event will take place on February 2 and 3, while the San Francisco event will take place on March 2, 3, and 4. All will launch on April 20th, the company has announced, though United Kingdom pricing has not yet been confirmed.

Don't spread the misery. Adults should take caution, too, even with other strains of the flu, as the mild-seeming virus can result in serious complications.

Cough and sneeze into a tissue to limit spreading the virus.

· Wash your hands frequently.

■ Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to use when soap and water are not available. If someone in your house has already had the flu, make sure you're changing out bed sheets, hand towels, and even things like kitchen sponges so you're super germ free.

The flu shot doesn't contain a live virus.

"I couldn't really breathe, so I just screamed throughout the whole house, 'somebody call 911, '" Charlie said.
