"Hope and despair will walk hand in hand when some of the world cricket's biggest names go under the hammer during the two-day IPL players" auctions starting on Saturday with the likes of Ben Stokes and R Ashwin expected to be among the most sought after. This year's auction will feature 578 players in all with 361 of them being Indians. Opening batsman K L Rahul, strangely out of favour in limited overs cricket since the tour of Sri Lanka a year ago, was bought for a huge Rs 11 crore by Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad matched that sum to acquire the services of dashing middle-order batsman Manish Pandey.

KL Rahul and Manish Pandey were picked for 11 crore each. Then came a big surprise as Chris Gayle, the fourth player who came up for auction had none of the eight franchise preferring not to make a bid. The cap for each team last season was ₹66 crores; this year it has gone up to ₹80 crore. Biding crossed Rs 215 Crores with 44 Key Players sold.

Delhi Daredevils brought Glenn Maxwell for Rs 9 crore, outbidding RCB; KXIP didn't use their RTM on him.

Shikhar Dhawan was the first player to be sold. Wriddhiman Saha was bought by SRH for Rs. 5 Crores.

In 12 matches so far, Stokes has scored 316 runs at a strike rate of 143 while also bagging 12 wickets.

2 crore ($429,000): Corey Anderson.

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, co-owner of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab, remained the most entertaining person of the morning session as she kept bidding for every possible player during the auction at the ITC Gardenia hotel in Bengaluru. Aussie batsman Chris Lynn went to Kolkata Knight Riders for 9 crores 60 lakhs, and so did his fellow countryman pacer Mitchell Starc for nearly same amount.

Kolkata Knight Riders bought two expensive wicketkeepers, paying $1.16 million for Dinesh Karthik and another $1 million to retain Robin Uthappa through their RTM card. The event saw its share of highs, too.

The chief executive of the Rajasthan Royals, Ranjit Barthakur, described Stokes as "a fantastic performer, a cricketer of today and a cricketer of the future", after buying him for $1.95 million for the IPL Twenty20 tournament. Any player who goes unsold will be available in a second auction, with their base price cut in half. Mumbai Indians purchase Aussies pace bowling machine Pat Cummins.
