  • More than 1500 flights canceled as snowstorm slams Midwest

Snow-related crashed snarled highways across southern MI, with one person killed when a semitrailer struck the rear of a vehicle stopped in traffic on USA 23 near Flint, police said.

The National Weather Service is sticking with its prediction of 7-12 inches of snow across the southern tier of counties in MI, but now says the winter storm will move through faster than originally anticipated.

About 550 flights were canceled at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and about 230 flights were canceled at Midway, the Chicago Department of Aviation reported this morning.

Ice and snow covered Chicago's expressways, where there were at least 25 crashes overnight, the Chicago Tribune reported.

By noon, more than 1,300 flights had been scrapped and another 1,390 delayed largely at Chicago O'Hare, Chicago Midway and Detroit, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

Though the snow will wane off by Friday night, the winter weather won't be done just yet.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the city was gearing up for three more rounds of snow through the weekend. Those could bring another 3 to 9 inches total.

Most school districts cancelled classes on Friday before any snow started falling, including the Chicago Public Schools.

By early Friday, more than 100 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan.

Meteorologist Heather Orow said this morning the storm is "generally going to be an issue for travel".

American, United, Delta, and Southwest airlines warned travelers to expect more flight cancellations to and from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. People should stay off the roads if possible and expect delays and hazardous conditions.

While less intense as it moves eastward, the storm is still expected to leave a few inches of snow over the northern tier, but will remain mostly north of major population centers like Philadelphia, New York City and Boston.

This mix of features gave the spiders their name: a reference to a mythical creature with a lion's head and serpent-like tail. It belongs to a group of arachnids (spiders, scorpions and the like) that were related to true spiders.

City officials announced school closures in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee because of the weather. The central and northern Rockies also will see heavy snow, the weather service said.
