  • Germany's Schulz steps down to ease tensions within SPD

German Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Martin Schulz announced on Tuesday to resign with immediate effect as Party chairman.

Deputy party leader of the SPD, Ralf Stegner, has said: "We need a new start".

Former Labor Minister and current head of the SPD's parliamentary group Andrea Nahles was nominated to take his place in a unanimous decision by SPD leaders, Schulz said.

With many SPD rank and file harboring misgivings about sharing power with Merkel again, the result of the vote, due on March 4, is wide open.

Virginia No. 1 in preliminary NCAA rankings
Michigan State is ranked as the No. 11 overall seed, behind Clemson (No. 9) and Texas Tech (No. 10). As things stand, the No. 1 seeds would be Virginia, Villanova, Xavier and Purdue.

Meanwhile, according to a survey, around two-thirds of Germans do not consider the SPD fit for national government, less than two weeks before the party is set to vote on a new coalition deal with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives, as reported by the dpa.

Schulz, a former European Parliament president, took over as SPD leader from Gabriel previous year, raising hopes within the party he could stand a better chance against Merkel in the September election.

Kevin Kuehnert, who leads the SPD's youth wing and is campaigning for members to vote against another tie-up with Merkel, welcomed the decision as he said it would enable the party to focus completely on the members' coalition ballot.

Schulz said last week he would quit to allow the party to regroup and he recommended Nahles as leader.

Schulz's own plans were becoming a major distraction for the SPD. Last Wednesday, the SPD reached an agreement with Merkel's Union in formal government coalition negotiations, a move likely to end the longest ever new government vacuum after the September 24 federal elections.

In a cartoon on Tuesday, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily showed Nahles with a whip riding an SPD snail. The SPD was at a record low of 16.5 percent, barely ahead of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The development followed Schulz's announcement Friday that he was abandoning plans to become foreign minister in the new government.

Michael Fuchs, a former member of parliament with Merkel's Christian Democratic Party (CDU), said he is optimistic that Germany's finances will continue to be run efficiently.

Guenther Oettinger, a senior CDU member and the European Union's budget commissioner, rushed to her defence on Monday: "I find her still strong ... and am sure she will meet the expectations of our party and the public in the coming days".
