"There should be no doubt that Russia perceives its past efforts" to disrupt the 2016 presidential campaign "as successful and views the 2018 midterm elections as a potential target for Russian influence operations", said Coats, the leader of the US government's 17 intelligence agencies.

United States director of national intelligence Dan Coats told a Senate panel on Tuesday (Feb 13) that the country's bitter political wrangling and growing debt posed grave threats to the country's national security.

Coats said will be among the most volatile and confrontational weapons of mass destruction (WMD) threats to the USA over the next year.

"We expect Russian Federation to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokespeople, and other means of influence to try to exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States", Coats said.

America's leading intelligence agencies concluded previous year that Russian President Vladimir Putin had directed a broad intelligence effort to influence the 2016 presidential election to undermine the campaign of Democrat Hillary Clinton and boost Donald Trump's chances.

American Intelligence Chief Dan Coats has claimed that Pakistan is developing new types of nuclear weapons, including short-range tactical ones.

"This threat did not begin in 2016, and it certainly didn't end with the election".

The companies have repeatedly denied that the Chinese government is using them to spy on the United States.
