Zuma refuses to resign, ruling party set to recall him

  • Down but not out- yet South Africa's embattled President Jacob Zuma has rejected a party request that he resign

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) had called on its senior decision-making body, the National Executive Committee (NEC), to hold a special meeting to decide how, not if, Mr Zuma was to be replaced.

A senior party source told Reuters news agency that the party's National Executive Committee had chose to "recall", or remove, Zuma as head of state after a marathon 13-hour meeting.

Secretary general Ace Magashule and his deputy, Jessie Duarte, delivered the party's recall letter to Zuma at his official residence in Pretoria.

The ANC has made a decision to tell President Jacob Zuma to step down after he refused the top party leadership's request for him to resign voluntarily, according to five people familiar with the matter.

An opposition-backed motion of no confidence has been scheduled for February 22, but its sponsors want the vote to be moved up to this week.

THE ruling African National Congress (ANC) parliamentary caucus has agreed to table a Motion of No Confidence against President Jacob Zuma on Thursday.

"The decision by the NEC to recall its deployee was taken only after exhaustive discussion on the impact such a recall would have on the country".

"Zuma is clearly digging in, fearing what could come next should he resign prematurely", Mark Schroeder, vice president of Africa analysis at geopolitical advisory company Stratfor, said in an interview with Bloomberg Television on Monday. Top ANC officials, including party leader Cyril Ramaphosa, were unable to persuade Zuma to step down immediately.

The ANC could throw its weight behind such a vote if Zuma, who has survived several no-confidence motions in the past, refused to heed its orders to resign.

The party later announced a media briefing to be held at 12:00pm to discuss the outcomes of the meeting.

Zuma has been dogged by corruption scandals since becoming president in 2009.

However, he would then be expected to face a confidence vote in parliament.

Egypt escalates army operations in Sinai
The sweep covered areas in north and central Sinai, the Nile Delta and the Western Desert on the border with Libya. Security forces also uncovered and destroyed six farms used to grow banned narcotics, the statement said.

The impasse has plunged South Africa - the continent's most developed economy - into confusion over who is running the country, with major national events cancelled amid the uncertainty.

As the Gupta-linked investigation proceeds, Zuma also could face corruption charges tied to an arms deal two decades ago.

That meeting lasted less than an hour, with Zuma refusing to comply.

Signs of law enforcement mobilizing against the Guptas, and by association Zuma, caused the rand to strengthen 0.5 per cent against the dollar.

Zuma served as Deputy President to Thabo Mbeki for six years when he helped orchestrate a putsch against the President.
