Cape Town: South Africa today declared a "national disaster" over a drought that has ravaged parts of the country and threatened to leave the city of Cape Town without domestic tap water.

The destruction of the cyclone left three people with serious injuries and 30 others with minor injuries in Tongatapu, Tongan Police spokeswoman Sia Adams said.

GITA also passed close to Ono-I-Lau island (Fiji) on 13 February.

Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program said via Twitter that villagers on Ono-i-Lau had told it that crops and several houses had been destroyed, but there had been no reports of injuries.

According to an initial needs assessment conducted by the National Emergency Management Office of the Kingdom of Tonga, one person died, 3 900 people were evacuated to 108 centres and 960 houses were damaged in Tongatapu island.

The UK Met Office said the storm - which brought winds of more than 200km/h (124mph) - was the strongest to hit the main islands of Tonga since modern records began.

"The only reports received of damage to homes are from Ono-i-Lau".

Meanwhile New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said of Cyclone Gita: "Our hercules arrived [in Tonga] last night, and we have had aerial surveillance which we has gone to Tongan authorities".

"Hi family and friends, my home country (Tonga) was recently affected by Cyclone Gita which caused catastrophic damage to our family home", he said.
