The inspector general wants to know whether Ajit Pai improperly pushed through rules in an effort to benefit the Sinclair Broadcast Group, according to The New York Times on Thursday.

And the plan this week got a key endorsement from U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai.

A couple of weeks later Sinclair Broadcasting declared a blockbuster $3.9 billion pact to purchase Tribune Media a pact that those new role made happen.

"I am particularly concerned about reports that Chairman Pai may have coordinated with Sinclair to time a series of commission actions to benefit the company", he continued. "It was unclear the extent of the inspector general's investigation or when it might conclude, but the inquiry puts a spotlight on Mr. Pai's decisions and whether there had been coordination with the company".

Kansas City named finalist to host NFL Draft in 2019 or 2020
However, following a scheduling conflict in 2014 - forcing the NFL to move its date back, the league took the Draft on the road. The Browns are focused on turning the corner in this year's draft and could be continuing the momentum in 2019 draft.

The FCC inspector general's office is investigating the appearance of quid pro quo behind agency rulings that have helped pave the way for Sinclair Broadcast Group's proposed takeover of Tribune Media.

The question for the Inspector General: Was Pai's push for the new rules improper and were they timed to benefit Sinclair.

The spokesman said that Pai has for years called on the FCC to update its media ownership regulations to keep up with modern times, so that the more recent actions are just a reflection of his long-held views. Both Sinclair and the FCC have declined to comment on the current investigation but called the original allegations "baseless".

The probe could also append information to debates against the Sinclair-Tribune deal.

Pai's office declined to comment on the report, but the chairman has denied his deregulatory agenda was meant to benefit any one company.

However, the FCC's two Democratic commissioners previously argued that the fine - for Sinclair violating sponsorship identification rules - should have been substantially larger.

The deal would give Sinclair control over the vast majority of local TV stations, a prospect that is disturbing for anyone who enjoys diverse, locally-accountable news, rather than having content controlled by one powerful central firm. Pai's rationale was that the elimination of the UHF discount had to be considered along with other media ownership regulations that cap the number of stations that an entity can own to no more than 39% of the country.
