  • Parkland Survivor Goes Viral by Calling Out Trump, NRA

It was one of hundreds of thousands of tips received annually by the FBI's public tip line 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Emma Gonzalez is a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 19-year-old ex-student Nikolas Cruz opened fire on Thursday.

That information should have been forwarded to the FBI's Miami field office for further investigation, but "we have determined that these protocols were not followed", it said. He was armed with an AR-15 rifle, which he used to carry out the rampage.

But no additional information was found to help identify the person who posted the comment and no connection was made to South Florida, said Robert Lasky, FBI special agent in charge of the Miami division. The accused gunman, Nikolas Cruz, 19, had been reported previously to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

On Friday, Trump visited a Florida hospital and met with people wounded in the shooting as well as first responders.

Cruz is now charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and is being held without bail.

"The FBI's failure to take action against this killer is unacceptable", Scott, a Republican, said in a statement.

"They say guns are just tools like knives and are as unsafe as cars, we call BS".

The FBI is already under intense scrutiny for its actions in the early stages of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Douglas Rudman, the attorney representing the store's owners, Michael and Lisa Morrison, said that "Cruz purchased the assault rifle off the rack, in a box, and did not purchase any ammunition with it other than the magazine that came with the gun". Their father died when they were young. "This is imperative, and we must do better".

The massacre has raised concerns about potential lapses in school security and stirred the ongoing U.S. debate pitting proponents of tougher restrictions on firearms against advocates for gun rights, which are protected by the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.

Several politicians echoed those words again Friday, noting that failures to act on tips about Cruz undermined years of effort to make the public part of the crime-fighting process.

Cruz's attorney, Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein, announced the news Saturday.

But Israel said law enforcement should not be held responsible for Wednesday's tragedy. Broward Health North in Pompano Beach has one patient in critical condition and two patients in fair condition, and Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale has two patients in fair condition, spokeswoman Jennifer Smith said.

The president - and a number of other politicians - have blamed the shooter's mental health.

The Huffington Post reported that 16-year-old Sara Rodriguez said she participated in the protest because she wants to "end gun violence". Twitter accounts from classmates of those killed on Wednesday featured strong words for anyone who doubted the need for gun laws.

Each incident like the one in Parkland brings calls for more strict laws on gun sales and ownership, but gun rights campaigners regularly succeed in stifling those calls.

"To every politician taking donations from the NRA, shame on you!" said student Emma Gonzalez, who criticised Donald Trump for the multi-million dollar support the USA president has received from the powerful gun lobby group, the National Rifle Association.

"Those talking about how we should have not ostracized him, you didn't know this kid!"

The sheriff's office received a range of emergency calls that included reports of a mentally ill person, child/elderly abuse, a domestic disturbance and a missing person.

Women's March Youth Empower, an initiative by the people who organized the Women's March, is also calling for gun reform.
