Google Pay will replace Android Pay and Google Wallet starting today

If you're unsure about what Google Pay is and how you can use it, here is a quick guide that takes you through the basics.

The company announced today that it is rolling out a new Google Pay app for Android device users that will replace its previous app, Android Pay.

Google is working on a new Android P feature that will prevent background apps from accessing a user's both the camera and microphone.

Despite bringing its two payment services closer together, Google Wallet isn't actually included in Google Pay for the time being.

"With Google Pay, it'll be easier for Singaporeans to use the payment information saved to their Google Accounts, so they can speed through checkout with peace of mind". Instead, Google Wallet has changed and been rebranded into Google Pay Send.

Google is launching a new unified payment service which goes by the name Google Pay.

If you're an existing user of Android Pay and already have the app installed, you don't need to do anything.

There's no indication that Google Pay will see any of the holdout banks joining the fray yet - so no news for customers of the likes of Barclays. There is also a "Cards" page which divides out individual credit, debit, gift and reward cards. The new service integrates these functions and adds more.

Google Pay works for transit fares in Kiev, London, and Portland at the moment, with more cities promised to come soon.

It is understandable if an app created to record audio requests microphone permissions, but when you have a flashlight app that's requesting camera and location access, it should set off some flags. Hopefully, Android P will make this system better - when app permissions are usually a one-time deal and you can't do anything to prevent that app from abusing said permission.

This progresses from privacy efforts introduced in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which was the first Android-based operating system to prioritise applications in the foreground and user-visible activities, however this still afforded background applications the opportunity to make use of the device's hardware while idle.
