Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel announced Thursday that Scot Peterson turned in his resignation after being told he would be placed on leave without pay. Peterson was eligible for retirement.

Peterson was seen on video arriving at the west side of a building, but "he never went in", Israel said. "He never went in".

Israel did not confirm whether Peterson would face criminal charges. "Address the killer. Kill the killer". Instead, the deputy waited outside for about four minutes.

Asked how he felt watching the footage, Israel said: "Devastated". There are no words. "These families lost their children". I've been to the vigils. "It's just, ah, there are no words".

CNN was attempting to reach Peterson for comment.

Israel said that deputies will now carry rifles on school grounds in Broward County.

A deputy contacted the caller, who was located in MA, over the phone.

Israel said two deputies are on restricted duty while they are investigated.

Israel made the announcement during a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Pustizzi said that caused "some confusion" for officers, but never put anyone in danger.

Israel also said that "we also need to talk about sensible gun control".
