Certainty in European elections has been in scant supply recently, but even the most left-field predictions for yesterday's Russian presidential race would have had a hard time backing anyone other than Vladimir Putin. There were half as many reported violations as in the last election in 2012, while Putin's "unprecedented" level of support showed that society had consolidated in the face of pressure from overseas, she said.

In Latin America, the presidents of the leftist regimes in Venezuela and Bolivia both effusively congratulated Putin on his "overwhelming" victory.

Putin, who has ruled Russian Federation for nearly two decades, received 76.66 per cent of the votes and is now set to extend his rule until at least 2024.

None of the seven candidates who ran against Putin posed a threat, and opposition leader Alexei Navalny was barred from running.

World Rugby Release Statement Following Referee Controversy In Spain Vs Belgium Game
Jaime Nava, captain of Spain, said: "I don't want to think that rugby has been prostituted to leave us out". Spain lost 18-10 in a match they needed to win to confirm their place at the 2019 Rugby World Cup .

Golos, an election-monitoring organization, said it registered more than 1,500 violations in regions across Russian Federation. "He wants to show that there is a little bit of Putin in every Russian, that he plays the Russian soul like a guitar", said political analyst Konstantin Kalachev.

Russian Central Election Commission chief Ella Pamfilova, a former presidential human rights official, said there were no serious complaints of violations.

"What, am I going to sit here until I am 100 years old? No".

Critics accuse him of overseeing a corrupt, authoritarian system and of illegally annexing Ukraine's Crimea in 2014, a move that isolated Russian Federation internationally. With leading rival Aleskei Navalny kept out, the election was a formality.

Large retailers urge Trump against China tariffs
In a letter sent to Trump on Sunday said potential tariffs on China would raise prices on consumer goods and drive down financial markets.

In the run-up to the vote, a new crisis broke out with the West as Britain implicated Putin in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal in England with a Soviet-designed nerve agent.

During campaigning, Putin, a 65-year-old former KGB officer, stressed Russia's role as a major world power, boasting of its "invincible" new nuclear weapons.

"The Prime Minister also stated that he looked forward to welcoming President Putin in India for the annual summit later this year", it added.

Putin's previous Kremlin term was marked by a crackdown on the opposition after huge protests, the Ukraine conflict, military intervention in Syria and the introduction of Western sanctions that contributed to a fall in living standards.

Warmer weather and rain chances for the weekend
It will still be breezy with the east winds changing to the northwest behind the system, gusting up to 30 miles per hour. Sunday into Monday will see at least two main waves of rain as our next system moves through the area.

Although Mr. Putin has six years to consider a possible successor, uncertainty about his future is a potential source of instability in a fractious ruling elite that only he can keep in check.
