  • Trump Takes on the Opioid Crisis: 'Keep Out the Damn Drugs,' Death Penalty For Dealers

"The Department of Justice will seek the death penalty against drug traffickers when it's appropriate under current law", said Andrew Bremberg, director of Mr Trump's Domestic Policy Council, in the briefing detailing the plan.

CNN commentator Van Jones reacted to Donald Trump's speech today by saying that the president's proposal to execute drug dealers is not going to be an effective solution to America's substance abuse crisis.

The Trump administration announced its long-awaited plan to address the opioid crisis during a phone call with reporters on Sunday evening. During a trip to Asia last fall, he did not publicly rebuke Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who authorized extrajudicial killings of drug dealers.

On the ground in states like New Hampshire, West Virginia and Kentucky - the front lines of the struggle to control opioid addiction - concern is largely directed at shutting down the supply of illegal narcotics, particularly potent fentanyl and carfentanil, shipped from overseas - and treating the lifelong struggles of millions of addicts. His victory there in the Y 2016 Republican primary helped propel him to the nomination.

Trump, who a year ago declared the opioid crisis a national health emergency, said he would start a public awareness campaign to reduce Americans' dependence on the drugs.

President Trump speaks about combating the opioid crisis during a visit to Manchester Community College in Manchester, N.H. on Monday.

VAR will be used at World Cup 2018 in Russian Federation , says FIFA
This was decided at the Federation Internationale de Football Association council meeting in Bogota, Colombia. Until now the World Cup hosts were selected exclusively by the football's body Executive Committee.

While invoking familiar campaign themes - such as deporting people who've immigrated illegally and building a wall along the Mexican border - Trump called for the death penalty for drug traffickers and hinted at a potential federal lawsuit against opioid-producing drug companies.

The Justice Department said the federal death penalty is available for limited drug-related offences, including violations of the "drug kingpin" provisions in federal law.

Other parts of the plan include broadening education and awareness, and expanding access to proven treatment and recovery efforts.

He said he'd like to see a federal requirement that doctors who prescribe opioids also become certified to prescribe medication for treatment.

Trump has mused openly in recent weeks about subjecting drug dealers to the "ultimate penalty".

"These sentences do not reduce or stop drug trafficking, and in fact often they have the opposite effect".

Warmer weather and rain chances for the weekend
It will still be breezy with the east winds changing to the northwest behind the system, gusting up to 30 miles per hour. Sunday into Monday will see at least two main waves of rain as our next system moves through the area.

"If we are not going to get tough on the drug dealers who kill thousands of people and destroy so many people's lives, we are just doing the wrong thing", he said. Doug Berman, a law professor at Ohio State University, predicted the issue would go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"I want to win this battle, I don't want to leave at the end of seven years and have this problem", Trump said.

"Lot of voters in this room", he quipped after his death penalty comment won applause. "This is no longer somebody else's community, somebody else's kid, somebody else's co-worker".

The new plan would also call for prevention, with a goal of reducing the number of opioid prescriptions by one-third over the next three years.

It is unclear how this new plan will affect federal prosecutions. Many times a deputy is the first on scene to an overdose or medical emergency, having training to use Narcan allows the deputy to administer life-saving treatment, according to a news release from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. He won the state's 2016 Republican presidential primary but narrowly lost in the general election to Hillary Clinton.
