  • Tariffs on China could spark a response hitting agriculture tech and aerospace in the U.S

After President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on products including Chinese steel, Beijing responded Friday with a threat to slap an equal 25 percent charge on US products such as pork, and a 15 percent tariff on such things as wine, apples, ethanol and stainless-steel pipe. The USTR will announce the proposed list in the next "several days", according to the fact sheet.

Kevin Lin (林成蔭), vice president of investment consultancy Caizischool Co (財子學堂), said that while a trade war between the United States and China would impact the Taiwanese stock market, it is unlikely to immediately cause record fluctuations in the local market.

Around midday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.31 points, or 0.01 per cent, to 23,955.58. "Yet China is absolutely not afraid of trade wars", an unnamed commerce ministry spokesperson said in a Chinese-language statement.

The Yale professor pointed out that, following Trump's logic, China's trade surplus with the United States is because "the Chinese are selling more to us then we're selling to them".

Earlier this month, Trump signed an order to slap taxes of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum products imported from countries including China. The measures, or the suspension of tariff concessions, will target 128 items including pork, wines and seamless steel tubes, the Ministry of Commerce said.

But some labor unions and Democrats said Trump was justified in delivering a swift blow to China after years of a lax response from the U.S.

Govt shutdown avoided as Trump withdraws threat & signs spending bill
Lawmakers on Wednesday unveiled a $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill that would fund the government through the end of September. The bill to fund the government past Friday is in the Senate's hands, but it's not all smooth sailing.

"We have heard from many of our trading partners that they share many of these concerns", the official said.

But China is less dependent on US trade now than it was a decade ago, making its economy resilient to these sorts of punitive measures.

The Commerce Ministry said higher duties on pork, apples, steel pipe and other goods would offset Chinese losses due to Trump's tariff hike on steel and aluminum imports.

In a second step, a 25 percent tariff would be imposed on eight goods totalling almost $2 billion, including pork and aluminium scrap, after "further evaluating the impact of the USA measures on China", the statement said. Then he announced the steel and aluminum tariffs, saying reliance on imported metals jeopardizes US national security.

His closest economic advisers and surrogates keep telling the public not to fear a trade war.

The inevitable fall in demand from a full-blown trade war would spell trouble for all the economies supplying the United States and China.

Judge temporarily blocks 15-week abortion ban
We will fight this unconstitutional ban and ensure that women can access legal and safe abortion care, no matter their zip code. Tate Reeves echoed that sentiment Monday, tweeting "It's a great day in Mississippi" along with a picture of the signing.

US Vice President Mike Pence hailed the new measures, saying they made it clear "the era of economic surrender is over".

On the economic front, the USA new orders for manufactured durable goods in February increased $7.4 billion, or 3.1 per cent, to $247.7 billion, the Commerce Department said on Friday.

Lighthizer indicated the industries could include aerospace, maritime and rail transport equipment, and new energy vehicles. The Treasury Department will also propose additional measures.

In addition to the tariffs, the USA also plans to impose new investment restrictions, take action against China at the World Trade Organisation while the Treasury Department also will propose additional measures.

The senior United States official said Washington was "very optimistic" that allies such as Europe, Japan and Australia would join its WTO case.

Shen said China knows that it has benefited "in unfair ways" from trade between the two nations and is prepared to open its markets further. "It's encouraging - we would like to participate in a process that helps educate the administration on potential downstream harms of the tariffs", said David French, the chief lobbyist for the National Retail Federation, which was among a group of 45 trade associations that is urging Mr. Trump to refrain from imposing tariffs. But he declared the US would emerge "much stronger, much richer".
