The 44-year-old officer killed by by the 25-year-old extremist, who opened fire inside Super U market in the southern French town of Trebes on Friday. On Twitter, the French gendarmerie said that flags would fly at half-mast in honor of the slain officer.

"Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame has passed away".

Cedric Beltrame told RTL radio Saturday that his brother died "a hero".

Speaking to the BBC, Col Arnaud's cousin Florence Nicolic described the officer as a person who was "so good at his job". "The Islamic State is winning minds, we have to wake up", said Didier, a member of the right-wing Republicans party.

President Emmanuel Macron announced yesterday organization of a national homage to who, as his mor said, "defending Farland" and "defending ors" was "his reason for living". He said his group's research showed that almost 70 per cent of the terrorist incidents and plots perpetrated or hatched in France in 2017 were ultimately against police or military personnel.

His actions helped bring an end to the siege that left three people dead.

Lakdim reportedly demanded the release of certain prisoners - notably, according to a security source, Saleh Abdeslam, the prime suspect in the November 2015 Paris terror attacks.

Far southwestern Wisconsin to be hit with late night winter storm
Warm road temperatures will keep travel conditions mostly wet and slushy Saturday as snow falls throughout the Tri-State. A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Two people were detained for alleged links to a terrorist enterprise, one woman close to Lakdim and a 17-year-old male friend of his, Paris prosecutor's office said.

He was deployed to Iraq in 2005 and was later awarded the Cross for Military Valour for his peacekeeping work.

As recently as December, Col Beltrame took part in a simulated terror attack on a local supermarket in the region.

The gunman then shot at four National Police officers who were jogging in Carcassonne. France has some very strict gun laws, and every single one of their laws was broken in this rampage.3 No, gun control does not protect innocent people, instead, it gets people killed.

Lakdim burst into the supermarket "shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) and saying he was a soldier of the Islamic State, ready to die for Syria", Molins said.

A gunman claiming allegiance to the Islamic State group on Friday hijacked a vehicle in Carcassonne, southwestern France, and shot the two people inside.

He singled out the officer who volunteered to be traded for a hostage and saluted his bravery.

Catalan ex-leader arrested in Germany on Spanish warrant
Protesters also turned out in the northern city of Girona, where Puigdemont was mayor before he became regional president in 2016. Spain's Supreme Court ruled on Friday that 25 Catalan leaders would be tried for rebellion, embezzlement or disobeying the state.

Arnaud Beltrame had voluntarily swapped himself with a female hostage and surreptitiously left his mobile phone on so his colleagues could hear what was going on inside. Beltrame had been wounded.

Radouane Lakdim had been spotted and tracked by the intelligence services, but the risk of acting out had not been detected.

Despite this, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said there was "no warning sign" that Lakdim would carry out an attack.

In 2011, Lakdim was found guilty of carrying a prohibited weapon and in 2015 he was convicted for drug use and refusing a court order, Mr Molins said.

On Saturday, police searched Lakdim's home and found what a judicial official said were notes "that alluded to the Islamic State and appeared like a last testament".

Le Parisien newspaper reported that Lakdim lived with his parents, and quoted a neighbour saying he had dropped off a little sister at school on Friday morning.
