Gundogan: Germany paying no mind to 7-1 ahead of Brazil match

  • Douglas Costa and Marcelo were in high spirits as the side trained in Berlin on Sunday

Brazil coach Tite says the "ghost" of their 7-1 mauling by eventual champions Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals still haunts the Selecao, as the teams prepare to meet today at Berlin's Olympic Stadium for the first time since that fateful night. This time they're, or just Daniel Alves for now, calling it the "world clasico": a much-anticipated encounter in Berlin this evening between his country Brazil and Germany that could essentially act a dress rehearsal for a last-16 clash in Russian Federation this summer at the World Cup in addition to a chance to exorcise some of the demons unleashed by one of the darkest chapters in Brazilian footballing history.

He's right. Friendlies rarely have much importance, but there's no doubt a clash with the world champions less than three months before the start of the World Cup presents a huge psychological hurdle for Brazil's new-look team.

Loew added a second striker for the final 10 minutes when RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner replaced Ilkay Gundogan as Germany finished strongly, but to no avail.

Gabriel Jesus headed in the victor in the 37th minute as Brazil, beaten just once under coach Tite and missing injured talisman Neymar, beat a second-string German team to restore some pride after their 7-1 loss to the Europeans four years ago.

Courtois sets deadline to get his Chelsea future sorted
Speaking with Belgian TV channel Sporza , Courtois said: "I've got one more year at Chelsea and I'm feeling good there". "I am still proud to play for Chelsea and I want to achieve success", he said.

With Brazil star Neymar still sidelined by a foot injury, head coach Tite made just one change - Fernandinho for Douglas Costa - from the side which beat Russian Federation 3-0 in Moscow on Friday. They're the Brazil everyone knows'.

Brazil is coming off a 3-0 win over Russian Federation last week but is still without the injured Neymar, while Germany drew Spain 1-1 with Thomas Muller scoring a fantastic goal to cancel out Rodrigo Moreno's opener. The PSG superstar got injured a few weeks ago and it is still unclear whether he will be available to play in the World Cup.

Just as back then, Brazil forward Neymar is sidelined by injury. "They are not as dependent on Neymar, although they have even better options when he is available".

After getting well beaten by Brazil, Stanislav Cherchesov says his Russian Federation side must step it up a notch in their next World Cup warm up match against France on Tuesday. This is a different Brazil, a better-balanced outfit under impressive coach Tite. Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose are no longer German stalwarts, while Brazil's attacking threat won't be reliant on Fred, Hulk and Bernard.

Rashid Khan thanks Afghanistan for prayer and support after World Cup qualification
Although Scotland could have lost the match, and probably would have lost it, the odds favoured them had the match been completed. A president must, I suppose, talk the good talk, and a captain must try to keep the spirits of his players on up.

Manuel Neuer of Germany lifts the World Cup trophy.

Gundogan, meanwhile, competes for a place in central midfield with the likes of Juventus's Sami Khedira and Liverpool's Emre Can, among others.

"The 7-1 is the past".
