Flu Second Wave: Influenza B Can Hit Kids Even Harder

  • CDC warns of a second wave of flu virus happening now

With spring here, that normally means flu cases decline, but federal health officials say there could be a second wave of the virus that we have to look out for.

The bulk of this year's deadly flu season was dominated by the H3N2 virus, an influenza A strain that is more severe and less receptive to vaccines than other types of the disease.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says you need to be on high alert because the flu is coming back.

Cases of the B-strain made up almost 60 percent of the country's flu cases reported during the week of March 17, said the CDC.

Though the H3N2 strain generally leads to more severe illness and hospitalizations than B strains, these B strains tend to be more severe for younger children.

"We've seen a few more cases of Influenza A recently, over the last few days".

The flu remains considered widespread across ME, but the decrease in numbers may indicate the spread of the virus continues to slow.

The CDC estimates that nearly 60% of recent flu cases have been caused by the "B" virus.

"This number represents the number of individuals who had influenza specifically listed on their death certificate", the report warned last month, adding the number of flu-related deaths is likely higher since "many influenza-associated deaths are due to secondary infections".

"We know that illness associated with influenza B can be just as severe as illness associated with influenza A", Nordlund said.

Awaiting Russian answer on Douma proposals: Syrian rebel group
Some 200,000 people are estimated to remain in Douma, including many who fled other parts of Ghouta as regime forces advanced. Jaish al-Islam spokesman Hamza Bayraqdar has said the negotiations are focused on the rebels staying, not evacuating.

Still, the overall are numbers are not what they were at the flu season's peak around Christmas time or a little after.

"You get the flu vaccine not to absolutely prevent you from getting sick".

First, it was Influenza A. Now, the CDC is warning about Influenza B.

Because of influenza B, the flu season is now expected to extend into late April or early May. But after reaching out to doctors and nurses in the Triad, they say the biggest point they want to drive home: the flu is the flu.

Still, this second wave is not entirely unexpected, according to Nordlund.
