Out Apple CEO Tim Cook had a bit of a Mariah moment when asked about the hot water Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg find themselves in these days over privacy concerns and a scandal that just won't quit.

"We could make a ton of money if we monetized our customers, if our customers were our product", Cook said an the interview with Kara Swisher and Chris Hayes. "We've elected not to do that ... We want kids to go to the store, right?" "Privacy to us is a human right, a civil liberty". The remarks echoed what he said in China over the weekend, when Cook described Facebook's current predicament as "dire" and suggested "some well-crafted regulation is necessary".

Said Cook: "What would I do? However, I think we're beyond that", Cook continued. In 2016, the US Department of Justice had ordered Apple to create a custom firmware that would allow investigators to circumvent the company's security features.

Apple is still a hardware company that makes the bulk of its revenues from devices, while Facebook nearly exclusively relies on advertising to make money, which requires extensive user data to fine-tune targeting.

"At stake is the data security of hundreds of millions of law-abiding people and setting a risky precedent that threatens everyone's civil liberties", he continued. "You are a jewel, and we care about the user experience, and we're not going to traffic in your personal life", Tim Cook said in Chicago's hall event.

"The recent news about Facebook's alleged mismanagement of users' data has solidified our decision to suspend our activity on the platform at this time", Playboy Enterprises said.

When asked specifically about the potential regulation of tech companies that are collecting and using consumer data, sometimes without a clear explanation of what that data is being used for, Cook said he's "personally not a fan of regulation". Now he has to deal with a #DeleteFacebook campaign that is trending, and is expected to testify before Congress on how something like this could happen in the first place.

Cook's comments, reported by Recode, were part of a taped interview for MSNBC's Revolution, which will air Friday, April 6.
