In October 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban assassin who jumped inside her school van and yelled, "Who is Malala?".

Yousafzai became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Prize at age 17 in 2014 for her work to advocate for girls' right to education.

Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, consoled a teary-eyed Malala, 20, upon her arrival.

It was a tumultuous and sentimentally turbulent homecoming and emotions were running high as Pakistan's and probably the world's most famous Nobel laureate and education activist Malala Yousufzai returned to her native Swat.

Yousafzai, 20, won global renown after she was shot by the Taliban in Mingora.

Nobel Peace Prize victor Malala Yousafzai returned to her hometown in Pakistan on Saturday for the first time since 2012, when she was shot by a Taliban militant.

"Peace returned to swat thanks to vast sacrifices of my brors and sisters", he added during this lightning visit of little more than two hours to valley of Swat, a rgión tourist in foothills of Himalayas that in 2007 took control of Taliban.

The activist, who is on four-day visit to Pakistan, met her friends and family before visiting the Swat Cadet College Guli Bagh, some 15 km outside of Mingora. Security was also visibly beefed up in Mingora the previous day.

Malala returned to Pakistan in a surprise visit in the early hours of Thursday.

Her family also told AFP of their joy in coming home.

She began studying at Oxford University in the United Kingdom a year ago, but in her most recent public interview, she told talk show host David Letterman about how she missed "the rivers and mountains" of her home in Swat Valley and all she wanted was for her "feet to touch the ground of home".

"It is still like a dream for me, am I among you?"

"We won't ask men to change the world, we're going to do it ourselves", Malala said.

She suffered bullet injuries and was admitted to the Military Hospital Peshawar and then taken to London for further treatment.

However she has also been met with pockets of intense criticism.

"Those who do criticize have an absurd kind of criticism that doesn't make any sense", she said in an interview publuished Saturday in Pakistan's English-language newspaper, The News. Is it a dream or reality?

"They were touching the mud with their eyes", Haqqani said of Malala and her family.
