  • Srinagar A policeman was shot at and injured by militants in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district today police said

As many as 15 young Kashmiri freedom fighters were martyred in three gunfights with Indian forces in Shopian and Islamabad districts, south of Srinagar - the main town in the region.

Political leaders also condemned the violence, calling for action against India. The police said that surging crowds resorted to heavy stone-pelting on security forces "compelling them to use force".

The Indian police force in Kashmir, for its part, asked on Twitter for residents "not to fall prey to any speculations and #rumors which are meant to disturb #peace".

Vaid said the army received information on Saturday night about militants hiding in an area near Dragad village in Shopian district, about 50 km (30 miles) south of Kashmir's capital of Srinagar.

Top security force officials said anti-militancy operations would continue in Valley and again asked the local militants to surrender.

An army officer, who declined to be named in keeping with army regulations, rejected the accusation and said the civilian was killed in the crossfire with insurgents.

Separatists had called for a shutdown on Monday, which affected the normal life.

Authorities stopped train services and cut cellphone internet services in the most restive towns, and reduced connection speeds in other parts of the Kashmir Valley, a common government practice aimed to calm tensions and prevent anti-India demonstrations from being organized.

An FIR into the incident has been registered and investigation into the matter set into motion, the police said.

A Times of India report on Tuesday that said that stone-pelters have turned their anger on tourists a day after 20 people, including four civilians were killed in anti-terror operations in south Kashmir, has now been clarified by the Jammu & Kashmir police.

The resolution highlighted the Indian forces' brutality against the innocent civilians in the form of military operations, pellet gun attacks and shelling. Rebels have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989.

Most Kashmiris support the rebels' cause against Indian rule while also participating in civilian street protests against Indian control.

As the fighting raged, anti-India protests erupted in several villages in southern Kashmir. They demand that Kashmir be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.

India and Pakistan each administer parts of Kashmir, but both claim the territory in its entirety.
