  • What would the Queen say? Prince Charles believes Australia should sever its ties with Britain and become a republic

The visit equals his mother Queen Elizabeth II's tally of 16 royal tours of the former British colony and comes as the 91-year-old monarch winds back her worldwide travel commitments.

He concluded: 'Prince Charles will always be welcome in Australia - as the crown prince or as monarch of Great Britain.

Charles and Camilla have boarded a flight from Wagga Wagga after spending the past few days with friends on a farm in Gundagai in regional NSW.

'Thank goodness the gardens are still here and it hasn't been built on, ' the prince said.

It comes at an important time for the British monarchy, with republican sentiment gaining traction in Australia.

Charles has declined a cheeky invitation to explain why he, and not an Australian, should become the nation's next head of state in a speech during his Australian visit.

In comments republished in The Australian, Mr Keating said the Prince of Wales was an enlightened, conviction-driven person who was often treated poorly by the British media.

"But the pretence of representing this country and all that it stands for is something he and we could well do without".

All three are ardent royalists and are really happy that Prince Charles will be Australia's King one day, and that they have had the chance to meet him.

"Prince Charles would just want to do his duty and he shouldn't be verballed by an ex-PM", the now-backbencher posted on Twitter.

"It'd be wonderful if he'd come out and say that outright, not that we have an actual expectation of that".

"People are entitled to protest and we have no issue with that", Mr Beattie said.

Juliet Rieden, The Australian Women's Weekly's editor-at-large and royal correspondent, is now on tour with Charles and Camilla in Queensland as the royal couple attend various events as part of their commitment to opening the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Publicly, both Prince Charles and the Queen have stressed it's up to Australians to decide whether to follow the republic path.

Dignitaries including the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, representing the prime minister, were on hand for official welcome.
