Prince Philip was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in central London on Tuesday for the planned surgery which took place the following day.

Britain's Prince Philip is recovering at King Edward VII Hospital in London after undergoing a hip replacement.

Buckingham Palace said in a short statement: "The Duke of Edinburgh has undergone a successful hip replacement operation".

On Sunday, the Duke was absent from an Easter service attended by the Queen and other members of the royal family at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, also the venue for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's weddingon May 19.

He has supported many charities, including the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, which he founded in 1956.

The royal was last spotted out in public on 5th March, carriage riding around Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip's health has been the focus of speculation for some time, given his grand age.

In June 2017, he spent two nights in hospital as a "precautionary measure" for the treatment of an undisclosed infection.

When it was announced previous year that he would be retiring from official engagements, Buckingham Palace stressed that the decision was not health-related and he had the full support of the Queen. Buckingham Palace announced in August he was readmitted to the hospital while on his annual Scottish summer at Balmoral.

Some media reports in the United Kingdom indicated that the timing of Prince Philip's hip replacement surgery was in preparation for the activities that will be involved in the royal wedding ceremony.

The husband of the Queen had an operation on his hip.

King Edward VII's Hospital, in Marylebone, was founded in 1899 and has treated other senior members of the royal family, including the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge.

Rehabilitation can be demanding and requires commitment, with patients having to walk with crutches for the first four to six weeks after the operation. Details about the hip surgery, however, have not been revealed.

Most people are back to normal within two to three months but it can take up to a year before patients experience the full benefits of the new hip.
