During the violent confrontations with Israeli border soldiers on Friday, eight Palestinians were killed and about 1,300 others wounded, reports Xinhua news agency. No injuries were reported.

Haaretz said the Israeli army is using live fire because it fears a massive breach of the aging Gaza fence.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are participating in a six-week long border protest that will culminate on May 15, the day after Israeli independence day, which is marked by Palestinians as the "Nakba" or catastrophe.

The Foreign Press Association operating in Israel and the Palestinian territories urged the Israeli army "to show restraint in areas where journalists are operating and to conduct a fast and open investigation into this incident". So far, over 30 Palestinian have been killed and hundreds injured by the Israeli military and police forces.

According to an official at Doctors Hospital, one patient is in critical condition, one is in fair condition and one is serious. Officials at Augusta University Medical Center told KRDW they were treating seven people involved in the crash.

At least 491 people were also wounded by Israeli live fire, the ministry said.

Despite widespread outcry from worldwide rights groups who have condemned Israel's excessive use of forces against the civilian protesters, Israeli has maintained its open-fire rules for the Gaza border.

Despite global criticism of Israel's violent repression of unarmed protesters, the country's Defence Minister warned the protesters and said it would not change its open fire policy. It follows accusations from the United Nations' human rights office that it has indications of Israeli forces using "excessive force" the previous week.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the slain Palestinians as Osama Khamis, 38, Majdi Shabat, Hussein Mohammed Madi, 16, Subhi Abu Atawi, 20, Muhammad Said al-Haj, 33, Sodki Faraj Abu Atawi, 45, and Alaa Adin Azamli, 17, bringing the death toll to 29 protesters since the "Great March of Return" began.
