Milos Forman, the Czech-born filmmaker who won two Oscars for directing classics such as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Amadeus", died on Friday at age 86.

Forman passed away on Friday in the U.S. after a short illness, his wife, Martina, told Czech news agency CTK.

He won two academy awards for Best Director, the first for his 1975 adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", and his second in 1984 for directing the hit Mozart biopic "Amadeus".

The winners included Jack Nicholson as lead actor, Louise Fletcher as lead actress, screenwriters Bo Goldman and Lawrence Hauben, Forman as director and the film itself for best picture.

"That is the only way to open the film to a certain kind of lightness", he said.

With some trepidation, Forman returned to Czechoslovakia to make "Amadeus" because Prague was one of the few European cities that had been little changed since Mozart's time.

Born in the Czech town of Caslav in 1932, he was raised as an orphan because both of this parents were killed in concentration camps during World War II. His next film, A Blonde in Love - inspired by a real-life incident in which Forman came across a young woman who had been duped and abandoned by a lover - established the free-wheeling, semi-documentary style that became his trademark in this period and made Forman a key figure in the burgeoning Czech new wave. "Not until much later, when I was suddenly far from my homeland and its culture, far away from my family, when I was cut away from the land of my childhood, I realized I shared this strong feeling of affection for my country with them", Forman had said, according to his biography. After attempting to get the rights to the musical Hair, Forman began work on an original screenplay, for the film Taking Off.

Forman's first U.S. film "Taking Off" (1971) was also filmed with non-actors but failed to impress a non-European audience.
